‘Are you ready for bed already?’ Felix asked when he walked through the door at just gone five with his travel bag slung over his shoulder and a bottle in his hand.

Connie shook her head. ‘No, just wanted to get cosy. Did you have a good few days?’ She glanced at him as he went over to the fridge, took out a bottle of beer and cracked it open on the side of the worktop. He looked good in jeans and a fitted dark blue T-shirt, his biceps bulging beneath the short sleeves, yet his forehead was etched with lines, and there were shadows beneath eyes devoid of even a hint of a smile.

‘Are you tired?’ She patted the sofa next to her and he came and sat down, immediately picking up the remote and flicking through the channels.

‘It’s been a long week,’ he said, pausing on a replay of The X Factor. ‘Oh God, this shite is on again.’

‘And Strictly.’

He groaned. ‘I made the mistake of going out yesterday evening for someone’s leaving do.’

‘Where’d you get the bottle from?’

Felix glanced to where he’d left his stuff by the door. ‘Champagne for the work I’ve done on the latest project.’

‘Nice,’ Connie said, leaning over and kissing him. ‘It’s good to have you home.’
